Did you know that construction workers are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than the average person in the UK? It’s a shocking statistic, and one that highlights just how critical it is to address mental health in the industry.

April marks National Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how stress affects our day-to-day lives and in construction, the impact is often greater than most realise. Long hours, tight deadlines, physical strain, and high-pressure environments can all take a toll on workers’ mental well-being.

At FBR Construction Recruitment, we believe in supporting not just careers, but the people behind them. That’s why our team includes professionals like Cameron Whitley, who is certified as a Mental Health First Aider (Level 3). In recognition of Stress Awareness Month, we sat down with Cameron to talk about mental health in construction and how we can all play a part in supporting well-being across the industry.

Why do you think mental health is a big issue in the construction industry?

“Mental Health is an ongoing issue and it will be until the stigma of others talking breaks down. Although both men and women suffer, it is predominantly led by males. A staggering statistic is that poor mental health within the construction industry accounts for over 200 suicides per year. Astronomical numbers. It is a big issue because we need to try and find ways of preventing this from happening where possible.”

With construction still being a male-dominated industry, there can often be a stigma around opening up. Cameron shared how the pressures of the job and certain attitudes can lead many to suffer in silence.

Can you tell us a bit about your Mental Health First Aider Level 3 certification?

“So, I am Mental Health First Aider – trained at Level 3. I sat the course which took a week and it really helped me evolve not just as a person, but as a manager too. It has helped me identify certain triggers, signs of warning, and given me the chance to help others both in the industry and personally too. So, for FBR if any of my colleagues are struggling or need advice, they know I am the appointed person for mental health.”

This certification means Cameron is trained to recognise the signs of mental health issues and provide initial support. He can then suggest ways to help as well as useful resources.

How has this training helped you support candidates and clients?

“It has helped me become more understanding and supportive. It has helped me navigate around experiences and give somebody a shoulder. It gives them the freedom to express themselves and be heard which is the vital point. I have helped a couple of candidates and given them advice. My colleagues at FBR have spoken to me privately and I’ve been able to make them feel supported. It’s important to remember though that I am not a professional, so when things have got to the next level of supporter, I have pointed them in the right direction to seek that help. They have thanked me and in return has made a difference to people’s lives within this industry.”

Whether it’s checking in with a stressed-out candidate or supporting a fellow colleague, Cameron’s training helps create a safer, more open environment for everyone involved.

What are some signs that someone in the workplace might be struggling?

“Signs can be very apparent or sometimes they are things you have to consider before getting to a breaking point. So obvious stress signals could be looking worried, constant visits to a doctor, snapping, swearing, acting out of character, panic attacks etc. Worrying about bills, family life, work, these are all things we need to be mindful of before they get to breaking point. It has real life stresses, worry of job loss, too much travelling, not enough sleep, too much work demand, not enough breaks, not enough support, they need more money, also then concentration can cause mistakes, illness, serious work accidents. It all plays a part and it can be too much where they feel they have no escape.”

Spotting the signs early is key. From changes in behaviour to withdrawal from colleagues or sudden drops in performance, there are subtle indicators that someone might need help.

What are some practical steps companies can take to improve mental well-being on site?

“Practical steps could be to introduce coffee or breakfast meetings where they all stop and be together, have 1 to 1 time dedicated to talk to somebody on site if they are struggling, open talks or presentations on mental health and where they can find support, perhaps have leaflets or signs around the site/work place with contact numbers of where to get help. Train members of the team who want to do it and ensure their colleagues know who the appointed mental health first aiders are. Sometimes, just some awareness and creativity to give them an open space to talk will help in many ways.”

Small changes, like fostering open communication, offering flexible working options, or training site leads in basic mental health awareness can make a big difference.

What resources or support networks would you recommend for construction workers who need help?

“I would suggest the following – reaching out to your own company dedicated first aider if there is one, or contacting your GP for support. There are also talking therapies pout there via NHS to register, and active companies who advocate this such as the Samaritans, CALM, Mind, SOS, 111 for examples”

There are great organisations out there offering free, confidential support. From industry-specific charities like Mates in Mind and Lighthouse Club, to general resources like Mind and Samaritans, help is always available.

Mental health is just as important as physical safety on-site. As a recruitment company deeply embedded in the industry, we’re committed to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging healthier workplaces.

If you’re an employer looking to build a more supportive team culture or a candidate who needs someone to talk to our door is always open.

Abby’s Heroes Charity of The Year Recap for 2024

We are ecstatic to share the details from our first Charity of the Year! Throughout 2024, our team, clients, and candidates participated in various fundraising activities to reach our £2,500 target. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, donations, and support, we successfully achieved this by the end of the year! We are honoured to have made a difference in the lives of children and their families who need it most at Southampton General Hospital. Read on to discover what we accomplished throughout 2024 to help reach this goal!

Tom’s Half Marathon

The year kicked off with an incredible achievement as Tom flew over to Cyprus to take on the Logicom Pathos Half Marathon. Tackling the challenging 13.2 miles, he crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 2 hours and 12 minutes. Not only did he smash his personal goal, but he also made a significant impact by boosting our JustGiving page with generous donations. His commitment to both his fitness and the cause set a powerful tone for the year ahead, inspiring us all to push our limits and support those in need.

Maddie, Cameron, Rich, Luke & Alex’s Fire Walk

Next, our team took part in an unforgettable challenge at Abby’s Heroes’ Fire Walk event held at The Four Horseshoes. Participants were dared to walk over fire, and our brave employees Maddie, Cameron, Rich, Luke, and Alex stepped up to the challenge without hesitation! Thanks to the generosity of those involved, the donations from this event allowed us to reach 25% of our yearly fundraising goal, a milestone that motivated employees to raise even more!

Alex & Luke’s Abseil of Spinnaker Tower

On the 15th of June, brothers Luke Wing and Alex Wing took on an extraordinary challenge, abseiling down the iconic Spinnaker Tower! Despite the windy conditions and some initial doubts about the event going ahead, they were cleared to proceed and bravely descended the 100-metre height. Their efforts helped boost our JustGiving page to an impressive £893.

Euros Sweepstake by Maddie

With the Euros kicking off in June, Maddie organized a football sweepstake, where half of the proceeds went to the lucky winner and half went to Abby’s Heroes. Employees were encouraged throughout the year to come up with their own fundraising ideas, as every little bit helped us move closer to our end goal and supporting Abby’s Heroes. The sweepstake was a big success, with the added bonus of England making it to the final!

Sarah’s Homemade Keyrings

Our creative employee Sarah put her own spin on fundraising by crafting beautiful rainbow keyrings to sell, with all proceeds going towards our JustGiving page. Inspired by the colourful and magical logo of Abby’s Heroes, these vibrant keyrings became a hit. They were sold throughout the office and at various fundraising events, raising both awareness and vital funds for the cause.

FBR Thruxton Raceday

On September 20th, we hosted a charity Thruxton Raceday, giving clients and candidates the chance to get behind the wheel and support our Charity of the Year, Abby’s Heroes. Nine Southampton businesses competed for the trophy, with the day starting off with a bacon and sausage bap and a presentation on Abby’s Heroes’ incredible work. After a safety briefing and morning practice, everyone enjoyed a pie and mash lunch before the big endurance race. The winners were awarded trophies, and thanks to ticket sales and Abby’s Heroes merchandise, we raised an amazing £1,562. Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success!

Christmas Jumper Day

To wrap up the year in festive style while continuing our fundraising efforts, we organized a Christmas Jumper Day. Everyone joined in the fun, wearing their best holiday sweaters and making a small donation, which helped boost our final fundraising total.

Looking Ahead

We are so grateful for the incredible efforts and generosity shown throughout the year. Every event, no matter how big or small, contributed to our success in reaching our £2500 goal for Abby’s Heroes, supporting families and children during challenging times. The funds raised will help them arrange activities like pizza nights for children and their families in the Piam Brown ward, fun day trips for the kids, and essential welfare packs.

We’re excited to announce that we will be revealing our next Charity of the Year in February. We can’t wait to continue making a positive impact on another worthy cause, stay tuned for more details!

Why December is the Perfect Time to Start Your Job Search

Why December is the Perfect Time to Start Your Job SearchDecember might be a month filled with festivities, family gatherings, and end-of-year reflections, but it’s also an ideal time to take charge of your career. Contrary to popular belief, the holiday season offers some great opportunities for job seekers. Here’s why December should be on your radar if you’re looking for a new role in construction or any other industry.

Less Competition

A lot of people put their job searches on hold during December, assuming employers aren’t hiring. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Employers still need to fill positions, especially as they plan for the new year. With fewer candidates actively applying, your chances of standing out improve massively.

End-of-Year Budgets

Many companies have budgets they need to use up before the year ends, including hiring budgets. This often leads to a surge in job postings as businesses aim to fill roles before January. Being proactive in December could land you a role that perfectly fits your career goals.

Networking Opportunities

The holiday season is full of social events and gatherings, making it a great time to network. Whether it’s a work function, industry event, or even a chat at a Christmas party, these moments can lead to new opportunities. People are often in a more relaxed and generous mood in December, which makes it easier to connect and ask for advice or referrals.

Getting Ahead for the New Year

Employers want to start the new year on a strong footing, so they’re keen to onboard candidates who can hit the ground running in January. Applying in December gives you a head start while others wait until January to begin their search.

Showing Your Commitment

Actively job hunting in December shows that you’re dedicated and motivated. Employers notice candidates who are willing to go the extra mile, even during the holiday season. It creates a positive impression and highlights your enthusiasm for the role.

More Focused Hiring Processes

While some managers might take time off over Christmas, many companies use this quieter period to concentrate on hiring. With fewer distractions, recruiters and hiring managers can take more time reviewing applications and conducting interviews. This means you’re likely to get more attention.

Temporary and Contract Roles

In the construction industry, December often brings an increase in temporary and contract roles. Companies want to finish projects before year-end or prepare for upcoming ones. These roles can be a fantastic way to get your foot in the door, prove your skills, and potentially secure a permanent position.

Why Choose FBR Construction Recruitment?

At FBR Construction Recruitment, we understand the unique dynamics of the job market, especially during the holiday season. Whether you’re looking for your next site-based role or a managerial position, our team is here to guide you through the process. We’ve got strong connections with top employers who are actively hiring, even in December. Don’t let the holiday rush put you off your job search. December is full of opportunities, and with the right approach, you can set yourself up for a successful start to the new year.

The Haunted Hiring Process: Don’t Let Ghosting Haunt Your Recruitment Efforts!

Ah, Halloween – the time for all things spooky. But while we can handle skeletons, witches, and the odd pumpkin spice obsession, there’s one thing that truly sends a chill down our spines in the recruitment world: ghosting.

No, we’re not talking about actual ghosts (though, with some of the spooky construction sites we’ve heard about, we wouldn’t be surprised). We’re talking about recruitment ghosting—that dreaded moment when a candidate vanishes into thin air, or even worse, when a recruiter or client drops off the face of the Earth, leaving a hopeful job seeker in limbo.

At FBR Recruitment, we believe ghosting belongs in haunted houses, not in recruitment. So, let’s take a look at the horrors of ghosting and, more importantly, why you’ll never get spooked by us.

The Phantom Candidate

Picture this: You’ve got a brilliant candidate lined up. They’ve interviewed, they’re perfect for the job, and then… poof! No calls, no emails—nothing but the sound of crickets.
Sure, life happens—things change, and sometimes a role isn’t right for someone. But disappearing without a word? Now that’s just scary.

Ghosted by Clients

Let’s not forget the other side of the coin: when candidates get ghosted by clients. You’ve had a great interview, and you’re eagerly awaiting feedback. Days turn into weeks, and you start to feel like you’re chasing after a shadow. “Did they even receive my application? Am I still in the running? Is this how it ends?”
Cue the spooky music. Candidates might feel like they’re wandering through a fog, trying to figure out where things went wrong. But here’s the thing—it’s not you. At FBR, we make sure you’re never left in the dark. Whether it’s good news or not, you’ll always hear from us. No one likes a cliffhanger, especially when it comes to their career.

The Spooky Disappearing Offer

Imagine this—you’ve gone through multiple rounds of interviews, received a verbal offer, and you’re on cloud nine. Then suddenly… silence. No formal offer letter, no follow-up calls, just radio silence. Days turn into weeks, and the excitement you once felt slowly turns to confusion and doubt. What happened to the job? Did it disappear like a puff of smoke?
This kind of ghosting is particularly frustrating for candidates who’ve emotionally committed to a role, even started making life changes in preparation for the new job. While we can’t always control what happens on the client side, at FBR we believe in keeping candidates informed. If there’s a change in the process or the position gets pulled, you’ll hear from us. And if things don’t go as planned, we’ll support you as much as possible to find something else that’s a great fit. We won’t leave you in the dark wondering what went wrong.

The Gory Details: Why Recruiters Should Never Ghost

Recruitment is about building relationships, and ghosting destroys trust. Imagine applying for a job, getting your hopes up, and then… nothing. It’s frustrating, it’s unprofessional, and frankly, it’s something we think should be buried six feet under.
At FBR, we pride ourselves on staying in touch—whether it’s good news, bad news, or just an update. We won’t leave you hanging in a creepy corridor wondering what went wrong. Transparency and communication are the anti-ghosting spells we cast every day.

How We Keep the Ghosts Away

We believe in keeping the process as human as possible, here’s how we do it:

  1. Communication at Every Step – Whether you’re a candidate or a client, we’ll always keep you in the loop. Waiting to hear back? We’ll let you know where things stand, even if it’s “no news yet.”
  2. Real Feedback – We know feedback is crucial, even when it’s constructive. We’re not afraid to have those conversations that some might shy away from.
  3. No Vanishing Acts – If you’ve applied through us, you’ll always get a response. Even if the fit isn’t right, we’ll let you know and keep you in mind for future roles.

Final Thoughts: No Ghosts Here

So, as the nights get darker and Halloween approaches, remember: FBR Recruitment is here to guide you through the process, no tricks, just treats. Ghosting might be good for a scary movie, but it has no place in the world of construction recruitment.

Happy Halloween from all of us at FBR Recruitment.

Spotlight on Women in Construction: Firsthand Insights from FBR's Female Candidates.

Celebrating Women in Construction Week! This is a time to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women in the Construction Industry. Despite being historically male-dominated, women have been breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and making strides in various roles within the Construction sector.

In this special blog edition, we’ve had the privilege of interviewing several of our inspiring female candidates. Their stories, experiences and insights shed light on the challenges they’ve overcome, the successes they’ve achieved, and advice for women looking to get into construction.

Interview 1:

Meet Emma Arnold, currently working as an Assistant Site Manager placed by one of our Consultants, Cameron Whitley.

What is your role and what does it entail?
Assistant Site Manager – My job role is to help the Site Manager in delivering construction projects to completion. I generally supervise the project from 1st fix through to handover, this includes organising both trades and materials while also making sure that health and safety regulations are adhered to at all times.

What has it been like being a woman in construction, and how do you see the industry changing?
I have worked in the construction industry for almost 9 years now and I have never had any problems with being the only woman on a site. I think that women on construction sites is becoming more common and generally most men are not concerned about this, I do believe it is down to the individuals you come across rather than the industry as a whole.

What advice would you give other women looking to start a career in Construction?
My advice would be to just go for it, most of the men I’ve come across are more scared of you than you are of them.

Experience on working with me and FBR Recruitment in general.
I first dealt with Cameron from FBR last year when I got made redundant from my previous role, he was very helpful and friendly. He helped me find a new job within one month so my unemployment time was to a minimum.

Interview 2:

Meet Emma Richards, a Contracts Manager placed by FBR.

What is your role and what does it entail?
Contracts Manager for a fit-out and refurbishment company which involves raising orders for sub-contractors, suppliers and materials for each project, material take-offs, putting together the Health & Safety paperwork and site plans as well as liaising with clients, designers/architects and site teams. Projects can range from empty offices to live, multi-occupancy buildings and sites.

What has it been like being a woman in construction, and how do you see the industry changing?
I began in the construction industry back in 2000 starting with an NVQ 3 in Carpentry & Joinery, from there working as a machinist making doors, windows, frames and kitchens etc. I then decided to look into Site/Contracts Management completing various qualification and gaining valuable experience mainly within the shop fitting and fit-out sectors. I have been very fortunate to have worked with some amazing people and companies that have both been supportive and encouraging throughout my career.

The industry has changed a lot over the years and will continue to do so. It is already working hard to encourage more women to pursue a rewarding career within the sector. There’s much more consideration taken and provisions put in place on site as standard and there is now much more choice in site clothing, boots and PPE etc. which is really encouraging.
