The Construction and Civil Engineering industry underpins the UK society and economy. Construction and Civil Engineering Industry insights

The pandemic has had an unfortunate impact on the Construction and Civil Engineering industry with the value of new construction work falling by 16.3% in 2020 to £99,651 million. This drop has happened after we had seen a record high of £119,087 million in 2019. There seems to be similar percentage reductions in both private and public new work.

Looking at the amount of employees in this industry, we can see that the number remains largely unchanged when assessing employment rates in VAT/PAYE-registered businesses. The total number of workers is around 1.4 Million, while self-employed workers in this industry fell to 727,00 in 2020. These figures are based on the data found by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on the labour force survey.

The Government states they are currently in the early stages of their greatest construction programme. Delivering more affordable housing in highly sought after locations as well as the major infrastructure projects like Crossrail and additional runway at Heathrow airport.

Health and Safety insights

The Construction and Civil Engineering industry is one which holds many risks. With some roles requiring various activities from a high vantage point. We can see that there were a total number of 39 fatal injuries between 2020-2021.

Over the course of three years it is reported that there were around 61,000 non-fatal injuries to workers. Before the pandemic the reports had shown a downward trend, however, the rates for the latest period (including the pandemic) the numbers are not statistically different from the previous period.
