FBR Recruitment Shortlisted for Best Company to Work for at the REC Awards.

FBR Recruitment Shortlisted for Best Company to Work for at the REC Awards. We’re proud to announce that FBR Recruitment has been shortlisted for the REC Awards’ Best Company to Work For category for organisations with under 20 employees. This recognition is a true reflection of the hard work, dedication, and positive culture our team brings every day. Being shortlisted is an incredible achievement, and it motivates us to continue nurturing an environment where our people can thrive.

At FBR, our vision is simple: to be the business of choice for both clients and candidates. We achieve this by building long-term relationships through honesty, integrity, and a consultative approach. Our core values of trust, flexibility, community, and people-first service shape everything we do, from how we place candidates to how we work together and give back to the community.

Last year, we raised £2,500 for Abby’s Heroes, and this year we have already smashed our £4,000 fundraising target for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, with more exciting charity events still to come. These initiatives reflect our belief that a great workplace is one that also gives back.

We believe in empowering our team to grow. Every consultant receives tailored training, clear career pathways, and monthly check-ins that focus on professional and personal goals. We actively support external development through recognised certifications, including REC training, Mental Health First Aid, and NEBOSH for those specialising in health and safety recruitment.

Our collaborative culture ensures everyone has a voice. Team members are involved in shaping business strategy, improving internal processes, and planning charity events. Their ideas are listened to and often implemented, creating a sense of ownership and pride across the business. As one consultant says, “This is an incredible place to work. The culture embraces diversity, empowers people, and encourages fresh thinking. There is no micromanagement, just recognition for those who go the extra mile.”

Recognition and celebration are key to our culture. Team lunches, office treats, birthday celebrations, summer BBQs, and charity events like our golf day ensure our people feel valued and appreciated. Flexible working arrangements, private healthcare, generous holiday policies, and volunteer opportunities further show our commitment to a people-first workplace.

Our employees often highlight the unique combination of professionalism and warmth that makes FBR so special. As one team member explains, “After 20 years in recruitment, I have never worked anywhere like this. The values of honesty, integrity, and hard work are lived every day. People feel valued, supported, and inspired. It is a company with heart.”

Another adds, “FBR encourages everyone to bring their whole selves to work. You are trusted to do your job and supported when challenges arise. The leadership genuinely cares about your growth and wellbeing, which makes all the difference.”

“I have never felt so supported in my career. Every success is celebrated and every challenge is met with encouragement. The sense of community here is remarkable and it motivates me to give my best every day.”

Being shortlisted for the Best Company to Work For award is a huge honour and reflects the commitment, passion, and teamwork that make FBR a special place to work. We are proud of our people, proud of our culture, and excited to continue building a workplace where everyone feels empowered to thrive, grow, and make a difference.

Tips for Securing a Job in Trades and Labour by FBR Recruitment AgencyThe construction industry is full of opportunity, if you’re willing to put the work in. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for your next placement, knowing how to stand out in a competitive trades and labour market can make all the difference.

At FBR, we place candidates into a wide range of roles across the UK construction industry every day. From general labourers to highly skilled tradespeople and site managers, we’ve seen first-hand what it takes to get hired, and keep getting hired.

Here are our top tips for securing your next job in trades and labour, and making a lasting impression on site:

1. Be Specific

One of the most common mistakes we see is candidates applying without clearly stating what they’re looking for. The more specific you are, the easier it is for recruiters and site managers to place you quickly and accurately.

When calling or applying, be clear about:

  • The exact role you’re looking for.
  • Your recent experience and relevant qualifications.
  • Your availability to start.
  • Your preferred locations.
  • Whether you have your own transport.
  • Your expectations around pay and shifts.

This not only shows that you’re serious and prepared, it also helps us match you with jobs that suit your skills, preferences, and goals.

2. Be Prepared

Turning up to site properly equipped is an easy win that many overlook. It signals professionalism and a proactive mindset, two qualities that site managers love to see.

What you should have ready:

  • Basic PPE: safety boots, gloves, high-vis vest, hard hat.
  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence).
  • CSCS card (if the job requires it).
  • Your own tools if applying for skilled trades (carpenter, painter, etc.).
  • Right to work documentation, if applicable.

Having everything ready means fewer delays, smoother onboarding, and more chances of being offered repeat work.

3. Be Reliable

This one sounds simple, but it’s vital. Reliability is one of the top qualities’ employers look for in trades and labour roles. If you say you’ll turn up, show up. If you say you can do the work, deliver.

What reliability looks like:

  • Turning up on time (or early!).
  • Following site instructions.
  • Being respectful to supervisors and other workers.
  • Taking pride in your work.
  • Completing tasks efficiently and safely.
  • Notifying your recruiter or employer in advance if you can’t make it.

Build a reputation as someone dependable, and you’ll never be short of opportunities.

4. Be Proactive

Get your paperwork in order before you start applying. Having strong references ready to go will set you apart and speed up the hiring process.

Tips on references:

  • Choose referees who can vouch for your work on-site (former employers, supervisors, or team leads).
  • Always check with them first so they’re expecting a call.
  • Make sure their contact details are up-to-date.
  • Let them know which roles you’re applying for, so they can tailor their feedback if needed.

Bonus tip: Have an up-to-date CV ready to send when applying, especially for longer-term or specialist roles. We’re happy to help you with this if needed!

5. Understand the Roles Available

At FBR, we’re currently recruiting for a wide range of trades and labour roles. Whether you’re looking for short-term, long-term, or freelance work, we have opportunities to match your skills and experience.

Here are just some of the roles we’re hiring for right now:

From Classroom to Construction Site: FBR’s Partnership with The University of Portsmouth.

From Classroom to Construction Site: FBR’s Partnership with The University of PortsmouthAt FBR, we believe in building more than just careers, we believe in building futures. One of the most rewarding ways we’ve done that in recent years is through our ongoing partnership with the University of Portsmouth, a collaboration that continues to grow, evolve, and deliver real results for students and the wider construction industry.

This partnership began in 2022, when our Managing Consultant, Cameron Whitley, connected with Emily Parry, a key figure in the university’s employability and engagement team. What started as a conversation about connecting students with the construction industry quickly developed into a strong working relationship, one rooted in a shared passion for helping young people succeed. From the very beginning, both parties recognised the challenges students face when trying to break into construction: lack of experience, limited industry connections, and often, very little insight into the many career paths available beyond the traditional trades, that’s where FBR stepped in.

Since launching the partnership, we’ve become a regular presence at construction job fairs hosted by the university. These events have allowed us to meet hundreds of students face-to-face, register them with our recruitment agency, and provide them with practical, honest advice about what it takes to get started in the industry. Whether someone is aiming for site management, quantity surveying, health and safety, or project support, we’ve made it our mission to show students that there’s more than one way to build a successful career in construction.

Beyond the fairs, Cameron has also taken a hands-on role in supporting students’ development. He has delivered seminars and employability sessions, covering essential topics such as CV writing, standing out in the job market, preparing for interviews, and making the most of university placements. His experience as both a recruiter and Mental Health First Aider has enabled him to offer advice that is not only career-focused but also empathetic and grounded in real-world understanding.

So far, we’ve placed nine graduates into full-time construction roles through this partnership. Each placement is tailored to the individual, we look at their strengths, ambitions, and interests, and match them with the right opportunity. It’s not just about getting a job; it’s about starting a career with direction and purpose.

For us, it’s incredibly important to offer that kind of support to young people. The construction industry can be tough to break into, especially without contacts or industry knowledge. That’s why we think it’s essential to nurture the next generation, not just by placing them in jobs, but by giving them the tools, confidence and encouragement they need to build something long-term. These students are the future of our industry, and we want to make sure they’re set up to thrive. One of the things that makes this partnership work is the genuine commitment on both sides. The team at the university is passionate about supporting their students, and we’re equally committed to opening doors wherever we can. The result is a growing network of young people entering the construction industry with the confidence, support, and guidance they need to succeed.

We recently visited the University of Portsmouth again, this time to sit down with Chloe Cruse, Deputy Manager of Optional Placements, to hear her perspective on how the partnership has developed. These conversations were filmed and will be shared as part of a short video series across our social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. In the videos, we talk more about how the partnership works, why there’s so much more to construction than people often realise, and what kind of support is available to students who are thinking about studying or working in the industry.

One of the key takeaways from our conversation with Chloe was just how valuable it is for students to gain real-life, current insight into the construction industry. Through our partnership, we’re able to offer students more than just job adverts we give them access to up-to-date knowledge about what’s happening in the industry right now, and a clear picture of the career paths available thanks to our strong connections with local construction businesses.

Chloe also spoke about the common misconceptions students have around construction. Many assume it’s purely hands-on, manual work, but the reality is very different. While there are plenty of site-based roles, there are also just as many opportunities in technical, office-based positions from estimating and planning to health and safety, commercial roles, and design. The variety within construction often surprises people, and one of our goals is to make students more aware of just how broad and exciting the industry really is.

We also talked about the creative side of construction, something that’s not often highlighted enough. Whether it’s solving on-site challenges, managing complex timelines, or designing new spaces, creativity plays a huge role. Alongside technical skills, employers are looking for strong soft skills too. Communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork are all essential, and we work closely with students to help them identify and strengthen these attributes.

These kinds of honest conversations are exactly why this partnership works so well. By giving students access to industry professionals and practical advice, we’re helping them feel more confident, better prepared, and excited about the opportunities ahead.

If you’d like to see more of what we discussed with Chloe, make sure to check out the full video interviews. They’ll be shared across our social channels over the next few weeks, follow us on https://uk.linkedin.com/company/fbr-construction-recruitment-limited to catch the series.
