Ready to Start Your Career in Construction? 7 Tips for Graduates

Leaving university and starting your career can feel like a big step. After years of studying, exams and deadlines, you’re suddenly faced with a very different question: what do I actually want to do next?
For graduates looking to start a career in the construction industry, there are plenty of opportunities available. From project management and quantity surveying to engineering, estimating, commercial and site-based roles, construction offers a wide range of career paths and opportunities to progress.
But getting your first role can sometimes be the hardest part.
At FBR Recruitment, we work with employers across the construction industry and understand what companies are looking for when recruiting new talent. Here are some of our tips for graduates looking to take that first step into the industry.
1. Don’t Wait Until Graduation to Start Looking.
It’s never too early to start thinking about your career.
If you’re still at university, use your time to research different areas of the construction industry and identify the types of roles that interest you. Careers fairs, networking events, university societies and work experience can all be great ways to learn more about the industry and meet potential employers.
Even if you don’t know exactly what you want to do yet, getting conversations started early can put you in a much stronger position when you graduate.
2. Make Your CV Work for You.
Your CV is often the first impression an employer will have of you, so make sure it clearly shows what you can offer.
You don’t need years of experience to create a strong CV. Include:
- Your degree and relevant qualifications
- University projects or coursework that demonstrate useful skills
- Any work experience or placements
- Part-time jobs and responsibilities that demonstrate transferable skills
- Relevant software or technical skills
- Key achievements
- Any volunteering, societies or extracurricular activities that demonstrate initiative
Most importantly, tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for. Think about what the employer is looking for and make sure your most relevant skills and experience are easy to find.
3. Don’t Underestimate Transferable Skills.
You might look at a graduate job advert and think, “I don’t have enough experience for this.”
Remember that employers hiring graduates don’t expect you to have a ten-year career behind you.
Think about the skills you have developed through university, part-time work, placements and everyday experiences. Communication, organisation, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and the ability to work under pressure are all valuable skills in the construction industry.
Your experience might be limited, but your potential isn’t.
4. Research the Industry.
Construction is a broad industry, and there are many different career paths to explore.
Take some time to understand the differences between roles and think about what suits your interests and strengths. You could explore careers in areas such as:
- Site management
- Quantity surveying
- Estimating
- Project management
- Civil engineering
- Building services and MEP
- Commercial management
- Planning
- Design and technical roles
- Health and safety
You don’t have to have your entire career mapped out before you graduate. Your first role is an opportunity to learn, gain experience and discover which direction you want to take.
5. Use LinkedIn.
LinkedIn can be a particularly useful tool when you’re starting your career.
Make sure your profile is complete and professional, and clearly state what type of graduate opportunities you’re interested in. Follow construction companies, recruitment agencies and industry professionals, and don’t be afraid to connect with people.
You never know where a conversation might lead.
6. Prepare for Interviews.
Getting an interview is a great first step, but preparation can make a huge difference.
Before an interview, research the company, understand the role you’re applying for and think about examples that demonstrate your skills.
You should also prepare some questions to ask the employer. An interview isn’t just about the company deciding whether you’re right for them — it’s also your opportunity to decide whether the role and company are right for you.
And remember: you aren’t expected to know everything as a graduate. Be honest about what you know, show enthusiasm to learn and demonstrate that you’re serious about building a career.
7. Speak to a Recruitment Specialist.
Finding your first job can be overwhelming, particularly when you’re not sure where to start.
Speaking to a specialist construction recruiter can give you access to opportunities you may not find through traditional job searches, as well as advice on your CV, interviews, salaries and the types of roles that could suit your skills.
At FBR Recruitment, we want to do more than simply fill vacancies. We want to help people build careers.
Our New Graduate Recruitment Scheme.
